Proxy glossary

The words on a proxy price page, in plain English, with the part that affects your bill.

Bandwidth metering
Charging by the amount of data that crosses the proxy, usually per GB.
CONNECT tunnel
The HTTP method a client uses to ask a proxy to open a raw connection to an HTTPS site.
Datacenter proxy
A proxy whose IP address belongs to a hosting company rather than a consumer internet provider.
Dedicated proxy
An IP address used by one customer only while it is rented.
Geo-targeting
Choosing the country, region or city your proxy address appears to be in.
HTTP 407
The status code for “proxy authentication required”: the proxy rejected your credentials.
HTTP 429
The status code for “too many requests”: you hit a rate limit.
HTTP proxy
A proxy that understands web requests and forwards them, including HTTPS through a CONNECT tunnel.
IP whitelisting
Authorising a proxy by the IP address you connect from instead of by a username and password.
ISP proxy
A static proxy address registered to a consumer internet provider but hosted on datacenter-grade hardware.
Proxy authentication
How a proxy decides that a request is allowed: usually a username and password, or an allowlisted source IP.
Proxy pool
The set of addresses a rotating service draws from.
Rate limit
A cap a site puts on how many requests one address may send in a period.
Residential proxy
A proxy that forwards your requests through an IP address belonging to a household internet connection.
Rotating proxy
A proxy service that gives you a different exit IP across requests from a pool of addresses.
Shared proxy
An IP address rented to more than one customer at the same time.
SOCKS5
A proxy protocol that forwards raw TCP connections without interpreting the traffic.
Static proxy
A proxy that uses the same IP address for as long as you rent it.
Success rate
The share of your requests that return the page you wanted rather than an error or a block.
